Genotypic variation in Polygonum pensylvanicum: nutrient effects on plant growth and aphid infestation
نویسنده
چکیده
Variation in the performance of 20 genotypes of Polygonurn pensylvanicum under two nutrient treatments was studied in a garden experiment. Nutrient fertilization enhanced vegetative biomass and fruit biomass production, but did not result in significant genotype-environment interactions, suggesting that nutrient variation of the range used in the experiment has little potential as a microevolutionary factor in this species. Leaf nitrogen concentration was not affected by a nutrient pulse. The degree of transient aphid infestation that occurred during the experiment had a weak positive correlation with final reproductive biomass of plants. Mean density of aphids per leaf was negatively correlated with percent leaf nitrogen and was not affected by genotypic identity of host plants.

Integrated Field Management of Aphids (myzus Persicae Sulz. and Aphis Gossypii Glov. Together) on Potato (solanum Tuberosum L.) Using Bio-pesticides
Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is cultivated in India in a commercial scale and this crop is susceptible to various insect pests of which aphids (both Myzus persicae Sulzer and Aphis gossypii Glover) cause heavy damage especially by spreading virus diseases. Studies were made to evaluate efficacy of extracts from plants such as Pongamia pinnata L. and Nicotiana tabacum L. and Polygonum hydropipe...
متن کاملAphid infestation causes different changes in carbon and nitrogen allocation in alfalfa stems as well as different inhibitions of longitudinal and radial expansion.
Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) stem elongation is strongly reduced by a pea aphid (Acyrthosiphon pisum Harris) infestation. As pea aphid is a phloem feeder that does not transmit virus or toxins, assimilate withdrawal is generally considered as the main mechanism responsible for growth reduction. Using a kinematic analysis, we investigated the spatial distributions of relative elemental growth rates...
متن کاملComplex Effects of Fertilization on Plant and Herbivore Performance in the Presence of a Plant Competitor and Activated Carbon
Plant-herbivore interactions are influenced by host plant quality which in turn is affected by plant growth conditions. Competition is the major biotic and nutrient availability a major abiotic component of a plant's growth environment. Yet, surprisingly few studies have investigated impacts of competition and nutrient availability on herbivore performance and reciprocal herbivore effects on pl...
متن کاملPlant genotypic diversity increases population size of a herbivorous insect.
It is critical to incorporate the process of population dynamics into community genetics studies to identify the mechanisms of the linkage between host plant genetics and associated communities. We studied the effects of plant genotypic diversity of tall goldenrod Solidago altissima on the population dynamics of the aphid Uroleucon nigrotuberculatum. We found genotypic variation in plant resist...
متن کاملQuantifying aphid behavioral responses to environmental change
Aphids are the most common vector of plant viruses, and their feeding behavior is an important determinant of virus transmission. Positive effects of global change on aphid performance have been documented, but effects on aphid behavior are not known. We assessed the plant-mediated behavioral responses of a generalist aphid, Myzus persicae (Sulzer) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), to increased CO2 and n...
